Cold Light of Day by Elizabeth Goddard Book Review

 Cold Light of Day

by Elizabeth Goddard

February 20 - March 17, 2023 Virtual Book Tour

Synopsis:

Police Chief Autumn Long is fighting to keep her job in the quiet Alaska town of Shadow Gap when an unexpected string of criminal activity leaves her with a wounded officer, unexplained murders, and even an attack on her own father. Despite her mistrust of outsiders, she turns to Grier Brenner, a newcomer who seems to have the skills and training Autumn needs to face this threat to her community.

Grier is in Alaska for the same reason so many others are--to disappear--when Chief Long enlists his help. He emerges from the shadows and proves his mettle, but his presence in her life could be a deadly trap for them both. If his secret is exposed, all will be lost. And he's not sure even Autumn could save him.

As the stakes rise and the dangers increase, Autumn and Grier must rely on each other to extinguish the deadly threats.

Praise for Cold Light of Day:

"Thrilling!"

"Elizabeth Goddard has created a novel that immerses the reader in small-town Alaska. From the first page, it's a race to stay alive and solve a number of ever-spiraling mysteries. I highly recommend this novel."

Cara Putman, award-winning author of Flight Risk and Lethal Intent

"A simmering romantic suspense with an explosive ending. Once more Goddard proves she is a master storyteller and deserving of her place as one of the best Christian romantic suspense authors of our time."

Mary Alford, author of Among the Innocent

My Review:

This is an engaging novel. I was hooked early with the tension of the intriguing mystery building. Grier is nice fellow but we know there is some secret he is hiding. Autumn is a good police chief in the small Alaskan town but she has issues from her past making her a realistically flawed human trying to keep her job. The mystery builds as murders begin to happen, leading to compelling action. It seemed so hopeless near the end I read way too late as I just had to see how it ended.

I like the setting. The small town is exactly the kind of place in Alaska people might go to hide out or start a new life. That could be because of a previous crime (Hank) or a secret from which one needed to hide. I like how Goddard developed the residents of the town. They formed a tightly knit group that helped one another, especially when trouble loomed.

I highly recommend this novel. It begins with mysterious intrigue and ends with action that compels reading to the end. There are a couple of twists thrown in too. There is a subtle but good faith message and just enough hint of romance to add an emotional layer to the plot. I've read a number of Goddard's novels and this may be her best one yet.

My rating: 5/5 stars.

Roses Have Thorns by Sandra Byrd Book Review

About the Book:

What happens when serving a queen may cost you your marriage—or your life?

From the author of To Die For comes a stirring novel that sheds new light on Elizabeth I and her court, a book that evokes the Tudor period's complexity, grandeur, and brutality.

In 1565, seventeen-year-old Elin von Snakenborg leaves Sweden on a treacherous journey to England. Her fiancé has fallen in love with her sister, and her dowry money has been gambled away. Ahead of her lies an adventure that will take her to the dizzying heights of Tudor power and plunge her to the riskiest, most heartrending lows.

Transformed through marriage into Helena, the Marchioness of Northampton, she becomes the highest-ranking woman in Elizabeth's circle and Elizabeth's dear friend and confidant. But in a court surrounded by enemies plotting the queen's downfall, Helena is forced to choose between her unyielding monarch and the husband she's not sure she can trust—a choice that will provoke catastrophic consequences.

Vividly conjuring the years leading up to the beheading of Mary Queen of Scots, Roses Have Thorns is a multi-layered exploration of treason, both to the realm and the heart.

My Review:

This novel of Elizabeth is seen through the eyes of Helena (Elin). While she was a lady in waiting, she married twice and was frequently gone from Elizabeth's side. In that respect, it seemed the personal aspect of Elizabeth's character was not presented as strongly as those of the Queens in the previous two books in this series. There was plenty of historical information included but I felt Queen Elizabeth was a secondary character and Helena was the real focus of the book.

This novel well portrays the religious controversy still prominent in England. It also explores the trouble with Mary, Queen of Scots, and her desire to rid the world of Elizabeth. We also clearly see the expectation that marriage be between equals in society's rank. Violating that principle without the Queen's permission could result in death.

This is a novel that well relates the political and religious situation at the time as well as the historical events of Elizabeth's life. I appreciate Byrd's Author Note at the end of the novel identifying fact and fiction.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

You can read my reviews of the earlier books in the series: To Die For and The Secret Keeper.

My Review

This is a thoroughly enjoyable novel. Basham's writing style is a pleasure to read. She has included a good dose of humor from time to time as well as witty dialogue. And the characters are fun. Lady Astley is a hoot. Her personality is very well crafted. Having read some books on solving mysteries and being an avid novel reader, she often makes investigative moves the officials would never think of. But then, that gets her into trouble too, like desperately hanging on to a runaway camel. Her ever faithful husband to the rescue. He is an enjoyable calming influence to her active nature. Orphan Zahra is a good addition to the mix. Working under the training of Lady Astley, I can only imagine what adventures those two will experience in the next novel.

This is a fun historical mystery in an exotic location. The exciting adventures are balanced with the touching relationship between Lord and Lady Astley. It does take a while to get to the exciting part of the book so don't be too disappointed before the first murder. The adventures in the second half of the book are worth the wait. This is the second novel in a series but there is enough backstory included that this one reads well on its own.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

February 1914, Havensbrook

Gunfire erupted from outside, sending Frederick Percy, Earl of Astley, leaping from his chair. The seat crashed against the floor behind him in time with another shot. What on earth! He grabbed the first weapon-like item he could find—his grandfather’s cane—and dashed toward the sound, nearly colliding with his butler moving in the same direction.

“Did you hear the gunfire, Brandon?”

The older gentleman’s brows rose as high as they could go without becoming part of his snowy hairline. “Indeed, my lord. From the south garden, if I guess correctly, sir.”

“My thoughts exactly.” Frederick tapped the cane against the floor and took a step in the direction of the garden door. Then stopped, a sudden sense of dread forming a lump in his stomach. His butler’s response was much too cavalier for an emergency. “Have you seen Lady Astley of late, Brandon?”

“Not since after breakfast, sir.”

“Well, then.” Frederick returned to his office for his own pistol and prayed whatever inspired a gunshot near his home would prove more benign than dangerous. After surviving several near-death experiences over the past Christmas season, Frederick was quite finished with drama for a while. Though drama seemed to follow his new bride in spades.

He met the butler back in the hallway.

“Might I offer an insight, sir?”

Frederick pivoted in his approach to the door and turned back to Brandon. “Insight?”

“Yes, sir.” The man released a deep sigh which pulled his pristine posture into a slight slump. He then sent Frederick a look which somehow inspired a grimace before Frederick even heard the man’s words. “Her ladyship was speaking with Mr. Blake after breakfast, sir.”

“Mr. Blake?” Frederick rolled his gaze heavenward, the tension in his jaw uncoiling into a slight annoyance that manifested in an ache over his right eyebrow. He loved his cousin. There was no man Frederick trusted more. But for some reason, the idea of Blake and Grace together followed by the sound of gunfire did not bode well.

For anyone.

“About pistols, my lord.”

And the answers emerged, along with an increased throbbing in Frederick’s head. “Thank you, Brandon.”

Setting a slower pace, he moved toward the south side of his manor house, another shot reverberating nearer. Within a month since Christmas, his American wife had learned how to drive the car and throw knives, two skills she appeared to excel in more than knowing the fashion of the season or how to address the complicated hierarchy of the aristocracy. His lips almost split into a grin as he recalled her stumbling over addressing the Duke of Westonbridge two weeks ago by calling him “Your Honorable Lord” and then in quick correction, “Your Grace, or at least I hope you are since I fumbled your title so atrociously.”

Of course the duke had fallen under Grace’s spell within five minutes, as everyone else who met her seemed to do since she’d moved to his crumbling Derbyshire estate two months earlier. Well, everyone except the villainess who’d tried to kill them just before Christmas. But that was hopefully a distant story, and their next chapter would be a lovely, peaceful belated honeymoon—he increased his steps at the idea—with a little surprise tagged on for his lovely Lady Astley.

Frederick nodded a good afternoon to the police officer inconspicuously posted near the house so that Frederick’s mother could work out her sentence of house arrest in connection with his father and brother’s deaths. He released a sigh. No, she was no murderess, unless glares and harsh words counted, but she’d harbored information that could have protected others. The law had been gracious with her due to her age and status, merely revoking her freedoms from leaving Havensbrook, so his mother’s life stayed very much as it had since Frederick’s father’s death; however, the added blemish of “criminal” to her reputation ensured she spent her days away from the public eye.

And if the police officer appeared in no great distress over the gunfire, Frederick knew all too well what must be happening.

Just around the edge of the house, a large garden opened to the south, its walls still well intact, though ivy-grown and tangled. Another shot reverberated through the damp air, followed quickly by laughter and his wife’s exuberant exclamation of “I hit it.”

Frederick’s lips pinched into a frown. Why he ever expected his cousin Blake to mind Frederick’s subtle requests was beyond him! The garden gate stood open, welcoming him forward into an even more tangled array of vines and twined greenery, the winter roses, a remnant of the garden’s healthier days, sleeping until spring.

He hadn’t had the means to make things right with Havensbrook before but, with Grace’s wealth and her generous heart, he could now. Another way to make amends for the past, he hoped, though

God had already bestowed on him much more than he deserved.

His cousin stood to the right, hands on the hips of his gray suit jacket, but Frederick’s gaze followed Blake’s focus to the woman in the center of the garden. Her bright auburn hair was twisted up beneath a deep purple hat that matched her coat, both in contrast to her pale skin. Her laughter echoed toward him, so filled with joy and hope. Two things he’d thought lost forever before he’d met her.

Yes, God had given him much more than he deserved, and sometimes, he wondered if God had given him more than he could manage.

The Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz Book Review

About the Book:

Alex has all but given up on her dreams of becoming a published author when she receives a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: attend an exclusive, month-long writing retreat at the estate of feminist horror writer Roza Vallo. Even the knowledge that Wren, her former best friend and current rival, is attending doesn’t dampen her excitement.

But when the attendees arrive, Roza drops a bombshell—they must all complete an entire novel from scratch during the next month, and the author of the best one will receive a life-changing seven-figure publishing deal. Determined to win this seemingly impossible contest, Alex buckles down and tries to ignore the strange happenings at the estate, including Roza’s erratic behavior, Wren’s cruel mind games, and the alleged haunting of the mansion itself. But when one of the writers vanishes during a snowstorm, Alex realizes that something very sinister is afoot. With the clock running out, she must discover the truth—or suffer the same fate.

My Review:

I thought this book had real potential. A thriller set in an old house with an odd author hosting a group of young women for a month long retreat with the idea of making them write a novel. You know odd and scary things are going to happen.

What I did not expect was the sexual tension. Considering it was a house full of women, the sexual tension was all of the lesbian style. There were graphic descriptions of sexual encounters, one being a vivid dream. That was something I did not anticipate and did not appreciate. There were also some supernatural elements which I had anticipated and did not mind. There was lots of foul language. These are young, career age potential authors and a few had filthy mouths and irreverent attitudes. I didn't like that either.

This book was not for me. I think Bartz has real potential. Her writing ability is good. I think this plot had real potential. It could have been a real psychological thriller. But it went in a direction I did not expect from the description and one I did not appreciate.

My rating: 3/5 stars.

Good For It by T G Wolff

Good For It

by TG Wolff

February 13 - 24, 2023 Virtual Book Tour

Synopsis:

Sam and Rachel find themselves in a diner in Wisconsin Dells, WI in the middle of winter. The calm in the middle of the storm is looking to be long and non-profitable. Then they hear about Catalonia Shoals, a retirement community for the uber rich and bored. A new con is started, one that will give the residents what they most want. But as the game unfolds, it's getting hard to tell who is the mark and who is the grifter.

 My Review:

What a fun novella. You can easily read it in one setting and it will be an entertaining time. Wolff managed to get me engaged in the characters right away. Even though Sam and Rachel plan to do some swindling in a retirement community, they are a likable couple. And the characters at the retirement community are a hoot. Just when I thought I knew how it would end, there was a fun twist at the end.

This story is part of an anthology by a variety of authors. There are allusions to previous experiences of Sam and Rachel but that did not detract from this being a fun and enjoyable short read.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

(Note: Sam is using John as an alias)

Rachel hurried across the plowed parking lot, slipping through the narrow opening in the mounded snow, to the nearest entrance. She made her way to the main foyer with the idea of meeting back up with Sophia to return her car keys. Stepping into the Tuscan garden atrium, she spotted Sam stalking down the room, his cheek and eye swollen.

Joey trailed after him, dragging his oxygen tank. “You should be proud of yourself. You took the punch like a man.”

For all of the crazy, insane, and deadly situations they found themselves in, Sam rarely lost his cool. He was always thinking, always working out a solution. No matter how hot things got, her man was ice.

The look on his face said her glacier was in Global Warming meltdown.

Sam spun on his heel and took a step toward the old man. Rachel called out sharply, “Johnny!”

At the sound of her voice, Sam stopped and just breathed.

“Joey,” Sophie said, her soft voice once again. “What did you do this time?”

“Nothing,” he said, wearing an expression of angelic innocence. “John and I were leaving church when this bear of a man walks into me. I told him, politely of course, that those were my feet he was standing on. And then he punched John.” Joey went to Rachel, taking her hand. “You have a lot to be proud of in your husband. He stood up to a man twice his weight without breaking.”

“You could sue.” Paul crossed his arms over his chest. “We could get a million, maybe five.”

“We’re not suing,” Sam said with authority. “You,” he snapped at Joey. “You’re going to make me whole on the seven g’s he took off of me.”

Rachel gasped. “Seven grand! You lost seven thousand dollars? Wait. Where did you get seven grand to lose?”

“He didn’t lose anything,” Joey said. “The money was stolen and as I might have had a teeny bit to do with it, I’ll cover it.”

Sam snorted and started walking toward their rooms.

“Don’t be like that, son. I’m good for it. You know that.” While Sam kept walking, Joey turned to Rachel. “Your man hold a grudge?”

Rachel calculated her response. She slid into a sad expression and shook her head. “Not usually, but he’s been worried about money. We should get the prototype in soon and with it the estimate for production. He’s expecting a big number.” She looked down the hallway. “If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to check on him.”

Inside the cottage, Rachel found Sam sprawled on the couch, a towel filled with ice pressed to his cheek. She closed the door and let go of the grin she’d been restraining.

“That man is a menace,” Sam said, scowling.

She swallowed her smile and crawled next to him. “What happened?”

“What he said. He picked the biggest, meanest bastard in the casino to flop in front of. The guy was a cop.”

Rachel gasped. “Sam.”

“A crooked one, luckily. Says he’s seen every scam there is and if I don’t want my ‘pops’ to spend the night in lock up, I better pony up the bail. I paid him two grand and was good until Joey opens his mouth about the other five I’d won at black jack. The idiot.” He shook his head. “And you thought he might be a pro. There was nothing professional about the shit he pulled.”

Rachel moved to the corner of the couch and tugged until Sam’s head was in her lap. “Maybe it isn’t all bad,” she said, smoothing his hair back. “The more he feels he owes you, the more he’ll invest.”

Sam relaxed under her attention. “Maybe.”

“Did you hear their latest idea?” She waited until he shook his head. “Paul thinks we should sell shares of the company. Instead of taking good faith investors, we should sell stock. The more I think on the idea, the more I like it. I can create a certificate, get it printed on heavy paper.”

He removed the ice pack to stare at her. “Paul.”

She put it back. “He’s harmless.”

“He isn’t, but it’s a good idea.

The Weight of Air by Kimberly Duffy Book Review

About the Book:

Two women--bound by blood, torn apart by circumstance--find together that true strength comes in many forms.

In 1911, Mabel MacGinnis is Europe's strongest woman and has performed beside her father in the Manzo Brothers Circus her entire life. When he dies unexpectedly, she loses everything she's ever known and sets off in the company of acrobat Jake Cunningham in hope of finding the mother she thought was dead.

Isabella Moreau, America's most feted aerialist, has given everything to the circus. But age and injury now threaten her security, and Isabella, stalked by old fears, makes a choice that risks everything. Then her daughter Mabel appears alongside the man who never wanted to see Isabella again, and she is forced to face the truth of where, and in what, she derives her worth.

As Mabel and Isabella's lives become entangled beneath the glittering lights and flying trapeze of Madison Square Garden, their resiliency and resolve are tested as they learn the truth of what it means to be strong.

You can read an excerpt here.

My Review:

This is a novel for readers who love all things circus. Being a circus performer is the main thread of the plot. Issues explored include getting too old for the act and doing what was necessary to hang on to it, even if immoral. There is also the issue of losing one's partner and main emotional support and wondering if there could be a future.

The plot moves along methodically with much character thought. The very first part of the book was a bit confusing to me, a mother willfully abandoning her husband and daughter, Later we come to understand the battle of postpartum depression and the disastrous effect on their marriage. There is also the concept of strength and what it really means to be a strong woman.

Just as Isabella (Polly) fought the melancholy that stalked her, I felt that was the spirit of this novel. It just didn't grab me and was not a page turner. There was not a clear faith message but there was a good message of forgiveness and reconciliation and the role of one's self image.

My rating: 3/5 stars.

My Review

This is an interesting novel for career age readers that takes place in Australia. It got off to a bit of a rough start for me with some course language but then settled into a good exploration of success verses service. I has sympathy for Dylan thinking his invitation to a professional football team was a gift from God. But that meant giving up his service to the church youth group. Another issue in the novel concerns when success comes at the cost of family and friends.

Since the novel takes place in Australia, I would have liked more explanation built into the narrative. I didn't know what Australian football was like. When there were references to a corked thigh and a mark that was taken, I realized I did not know the sport at all. I would have liked to have learned a bit about how it is played since it's popularity was a big part of the plot. Also, it took me a while to figure out tea in the novel is what we would call dinner or supper.

This is a novel for readers who like to read a novel taking place in another country. It may appeal more to male readers as the main character is a man. There is just the very slightest hint of romance and a good faith message in the end.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

About the Author

Since I could hold a pencil, I’ve be writing.

In primary school, I wrote stories about my pets, my own version of princess stories, a classroom crush…

In high school, I wrote stories about horses, adventures, my sister…

However, as strong as the writing hobby was, I still pursued a career in Veterinary Nursing.

It wasn’t until God intervened and moved me out of the city and into a small country town to be a farmer’s wife, that he resurfaced the writing desire – and gave me the stories. So was born my debut series, each book holding a part of my own testimony, Casts of Silver.

It is my prayer that you enjoy the journey these stories take you on, and that they challenge, encourage and inspire you.

She lives with her husband and 2 children on a farm in North West Victoria, Australia.

Hello! I'm Karen, or Kazzy Wazzy to my husband. 😃

Since I could hold a pencil, I’ve been writing.

In primary school, I wrote stories about my pets, my own version of princess stories, a classroom crush… *grin*

In high-school, I wrote stories about horses, adventures, my Sister…remember that story sis? *smile*

However, as strong as the writing hobby was, I still pursued a career in Veterinary Nursing by day, and a professional Ballroom Dance teacher of an evening.

It wasn’t until God intervened, moved me out of the city at into a small country town to be a farmers wife, that He resurfaced the writing desire – and gave me the stories. So was born my debut series, each book holding a part of my own testimony, Casts of Silver.

Centred around five youth group leaders, the stories look at very real circumstances young people face without sugar coating consequences of individual actions. However, where is God when problems arise?

Well, He’s always closer than you think, and He’s always working for your good.

It is my prayer you enjoy the journey these stories take you on and that they challenge, encourage and inspire you.
