Author: Tamara. G. Cooper

Genre: Romantic Suspense (Christian)

Aaron’s life shatters in the aftermath of his best friend’s sudden, bizarre death. He firmly believes her demise was no mere accident, as the authorities ruled, but a cold-blooded murder. Driven to the brink of despair by the relentless media shadowing his every move, accusing him of causing her death, he needs a place to hide. Salvation dawns in an unexpected inheritance — the dense, sprawling wilderness of his great aunt’s East Texas estate. There, he discovers another surprise: his first love recently moved back to the area. She intrigued him at fourteen; she completely captivates him at twenty-six.

The discovery of a woman’s body on his property is chillingly timed on the grim anniversary of his friend’s death, shaking Aaron to his core. He realizes the bloodthirsty killer has delivered a disturbingly personal message to him: You cannot hide from me. Suddenly, his secluded sanctuary is exposed, a beacon for the merciless media relentlessly searching for him. He fortifies his estate, transforming it into a fortress against what he understands now is an inevitable attack. The murderer’s tightening noose of fear threatens to ensnare him. Outsmarting this ruthless predator has become a deadly game of chess, where every move could be his last.

My Review

This novel is shrouded in mystery from the beginning. Who is this mysterious man and why is he such a recluse? As the plot progresses, we do find out who he is and why he is hiding. He has a transforming experience and in that sense this is an adult coming of age story. He ultimately finds his true self.

Cooper deals with many issues in this novel. Guilt and self-forgiveness are a couple. Learning what love is really all about and accepting it are a couple more. Aaron learns he needs people in his life. The secondary characters are great, coming around him to help him find himself.

There is a good mix of mystery, transforming discovery and romance in this novel. There is a clear faith message too. This is the first novel I have read by Cooper and I liked it.

My rating:4/5 stars.

About the Author

Tamara G. Cooper is a Texas-based author who finds inspiration in the simple things in life: hiking, camping, fishing, and long walks with her family that end in a picnic. She lives in a small town in East Texas with her husband, her youngest of five sons, and four dogs. Tamara loves writing suspense/mystery stories with just a touch of romance.

More from Tamara

I’m an East Texan, through and through. You should hear me talk! There is no mistaking that I’m from Texas. So, one day, I was wondering: what would it be like if a New Yorker moved to East Texas? Better yet, let’s make him a billionaire New Yorker who wants nothing to do with “rednecks” but is forced to move to Texas. What would motivate him to move there, especially when he’s made it very clear that he wants nothing to do with Texas or Texans?

Running for his life would work. Suddenly, he needs a place to hide. The people after him know of his other homes and have them staked out. So, where could he go? His great-aunt Dottie dies and wills her 6,000-acre estate in East Texas to him. Perfect! It sets him up nicely where he doesn’t want to be. And to add icing to this Texas cake? His first love at fourteen recently moved back to the area where he’d met her on one of his family’s rare visits with Aunt Dottie.

But life doesn’t settle down for him. Of course, it doesn’t, right?

And that’s how this book came about. I love Aaron. Every day, I couldn’t wait to get back to him and his story. He has so much to give and doesn’t even know it. As one of the “walking wounded,” he’s going to discover what really matters in life, but it’s not going to be easy for him.

One thing that’s somewhat different about me as a writer is that I don’t outline my books. I sit at my computer and let the characters tell me their stories. Sounds a little weird, doesn’t it? But it works for me. They take me in all kinds of directions! When the first draft is finished, I consider it my “outline.” Now, the fun begins with editing!

I love writing. I love storytelling. “Revenge” is one of my favorite stories and, yes, I fell a little bit in love with Aaron. I hope you do, too.

2024 ... Your Year of More by Noah William Smith Book Review

About the Book:

2024... Your Year of More
is your go-to book to set goals and mindfully invest your efforts. It appeals to adults of all ages, nationalities, and backgrounds who wish to improve their lives. Its pages are packed with something special for everyone.

The pages contain practical ideas from
A to Z, thought-provoking questions, and self-reflective exercises that inspire you to live your best life.

The book is an ideal companion during your moments of solitude. You can read it in the early morning before the rest of the world wakes up or during the evenings after a long day. You may also find it enjoyable while writing in your journal or taking a lunch break.

Enthusiastic indie author Noah William Smith knows the blessings and challenges of intelligence, creativity, high sensitivity and being a minority, underdog and outsider. While his books are based on his experiences, they offer valuable insights without being prescriptive or offering advice.

The book's authenticity and invaluable insights make it a compelling read that will remain relevant for many years!

My Review:

Smith's books are based on life experiences, he says, and he shares many of them in this book. Some seem to be rather random, such as going to the dentist or experiences with their dogs. They do relate to the topic being written about, however, often examples of decisions he made.

Smith arranges his thoughts in alphabetical order and asks many open ended questions. “How do you manage your anger?” is an example. He also asks readers to think of ideas for the future and gives space for writing down those ideas. But you will not find any particular strategy for creating goals or help with carrying them out.

This book would be a good stimulus for journaling, for brainstorming the future. It does lack any practical suggestions to get you there.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

Independently Published, 112 pages.

Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky by Jessie Asya Kanzer Book Review

About the Book:

Volodymyr Zelensky captivated the world when his country was invaded by Russia in February 2022. His appearances were accompanied by countless inspiring statements. But there's a single one that informs Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky: "We are all simple people."

Jessie Kanzer sees Zelensky as a Spiritual Leader for Our Times. As a native Russian speaker (like Zelensky himself), she picks up on the deep philosophical ramifications behind his words. Rich and yet easy-to-read, the life lessons in Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky are accessible and wise, and are more about starting where you are than about war.

Kanzer herself has a bit part in Zelensky's life story, acting in one of his movies filmed in the States. She's a self-described "spiritual nerd" who followed Zelensky long before he stood before a blue and yellow backdrop on the national stage. She writes, "What is so incredible about our man Volodymyr is that his belief in himself stems not from seeing himself as special, but from seeing himself as ordinary and from knowing there is great power in this ordinariness."

My Review:

I was amazed at the sudden and powerful image of leadership Zelensky exhibited on the world stage. Who was this man and how did he, a comedian, possess such strong leadership skills?

Kanzer says we can learn many valuable life lessons from Zelensky, lessons that do not depend on a positive outcome. His moral clarity is remarkable, she says, and his example can serve us no matter what is happening in our lives. She explores a number of topics, giving Zelensky's view and how they are meaningful to life. Identity based on what you do and not on your ethnicity, for example. Using your ability, not letting others stop you by setting limits. Having faith in yourself, believing an ordinary person can achieve great things. Serving others with humility, living your purpose, and speaking truth are a few more.

I like this book. While the focus is on one individual, to message is to all of us. Ordinary people can be extraordinary when called upon. I do wish there had been more information about Zelensky's formative experiences and possible mentors.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

About the Author:

JESSIE ASYA KANZER is the award-winning author of Don’t Just Sit There, DO NOTHING and Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky. She was born in the Soviet Union and left at age eight. A former reporter and actress, she once found herself on the set of a Zelensky film and has been following his story ever since. Kanzer’s writing has appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, the Washington Post, and many other publications. She's been interviewed on podcasts and TV programs across the country. She lives with her husband, two daughters, and two cats in Dobbs Ferry, NY.

My Review

This is a powerful book and one Christians who want to obey the command to renew their mind would do well to read. Cooney has included a great deal of information from a variety of sources. I like her encouraging us to challenge our thoughts. Our thoughts may not, in fact, represent reality. She has good teaching on how to take our thoughts captive and change our mindset.

Some may not be aware that humans have the ability to observe their thoughts, metacognition. It is a learned skill that takes practice and Cooney suggests journaling as a good tool to clarify thoughts and reconnect with feelings. I really appreciate her enlightening teaching on the difference between perfectionism and excellence. Another of her subjects I really liked was her exploration of expanding our thinking, such as critical thinking.

Cooney gives practical steps to carry out her teachings. This is not a book to read and set on the shelf. This is a book you will refer to again and again on your journey to take your thoughts captive and change your mindset.

My rating: 5/5 stars.

You can read my reviews of the other books Cooney has written in this series: Mindset Make Over, Unlock the Mind of a Champion, and Anxiety Anonymous.

Deadly Tides by Mary Keliikoa Blog Tour Book Review

Deadly Tides

by Mary Keliikoa

October 23 - November 17, 2023 Virtual Book Tour

Synopsis:

A missing surf legend. Waterlogged clues. Can he trust his gut instincts to end the wave of murder?

Sheriff Jax Turner is learning to live again. Holding tight to the hope of reconciling with his FBI agent ex-wife, the wary man is determined to keep his focus on his coastal Oregon community. And after a concerned brother requests a welfare check, Jax is troubled to find the absent surf shop owner’s tracks lead to a pool of blood.

Now investigating a potential homicide, Turner chases a tip from his former spouse about a severed foot found on the beach. But when a torrent of leads links the victim to a politician's son, a jealous competitor, and a get-straight program for youth, the steadfast lawman fears layers of lies and secret agendas will keep him from stopping a vicious killer.

Can he unravel the fatal agenda before he’s the next corpse to wash ashore?

If you like flawed heroes, gritty crimes, and dark twists and turns, then you’ll love Deadly Tides, the chilling second book in Mary Keliikoa’s Misty Pines Mystery Series.

Praise for Deadly Tides:

"Keliikoa has crafted a page-turning second installment....An intense and satisfying whodunit."
~ Kirkus Reviews

"In this atmospheric second entry in her Misty Pines series, Mary Keliikoa has crafted a taut, small-town police procedural with a fine cast of compelling characters. Deadly Tides is a marvelously labyrinthine mystery that lays bare the tortured nature of a spirit driven to murder. That alone would be enough to recommend it. But it's also a poignant exploration of loss and the difficult journey that leads to healing. In the crime genre, that's a rare and beautiful accomplishment."
~ William Kent Krueger, author of Fox Creek and This Tender Land

"In Mary Keliikoa's Deadly Tides, a small seaside town can be murder. A perfect blend of a twisty whodunnit and a heartbreaking examination of loss and love, Deadly Tides is a thrilling continuation of this new series!"
~ Rachel Howzell Hall, best-selling novelist of We Lie Here and These Toxic Things

"Fantastic! A severed foot, a pool of blood, a missing man, and an expanding web of suspects in the small Oregon town of Misty Pines. Sheriff Jax Turner sure has his hands full. Mary Keliikoa's "Deadly Tides" is as taut as a drum, a real page-turner with a propulsive climax that'll have you literally holding your breath. Loved it."
~ Tracy Clark, author of the Cass Raines Chicago Mystery series and the Det. Harriet Foster series

My Review:

I enjoyed this murder mystery set on the Oregon coast. I remember when shoes with feet inside washed up on Washington and British Columbia shores so this novel was of particular interest to me. I like how Keliikoa created a believable plot and motive structure for the same kind of events. The plot is a little complex as there are layers of participants to the events Jax is investigating. The layers of responsibility are revealed as the investigation proceeds. There was a great twist near the end that led to good suspense.

While I liked the setting and plot, I think the characters made the novel so enjoyable. The major ones have suffered loss and part of the impact of the novel is how each of them reacted to that loss. Since this is the second in a series and the character reactions are so important, I would recommend reading the earlier novel first. I also like the introduction of a new deputy and I hope she and her sidekick figure prominently in the next novel.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

Read an excerpt:

CHAPTER 1

Abby Kanekoa rolled through town in her Prius, searching the empty streets and worrying her bottom lip with her teeth. Stonebridge Assisted Living Center had called an hour ago to let her know her mother, Dora Michaels, had walked away. Again.

It was early January on the Oregon coast. There’d been no substantial rainfall for several days. The chilly mist-filled winds had come through that morning, though, and the center couldn’t say exactly when her mother had slipped out their door. Time to put a better lock on that thing. Mom might not be drenched to the bone, but she’d be cold.

Thankfully, this was Abby’s scheduled day off. Not that the FBI didn’t work with her regardless. After her daughter, Lulu, died of leukemia, they’d brought her back to the team as if she’d never left. They understood her bad days. Same since her divorce. Despite what Jax thought about how she’d handled her grief, burying herself in her work and having the support of the Bureau had saved her more than once.

Especially the flex schedule. With her mother’s early onset of Alzheimer’s, it allowed for these occasional searches.

Or not so occasional, as it were. Mom had escaped three times this month.

Greenery and garland from the holidays still clung to the streetlamps on Misty Pines’ main strip. But she had yet to catch a glimmer of her mother’s fiery red hair. At a crawl, Abby glanced inside each of the storefronts. Last time, she’d found her mother at the donut counter picking out an apple fritter.

“Honey’s favorite,” she’d repeated all the way to the car, her hand gripping a white bag full of them.

Abby’s Hawaiian father—“Honey,” as her mother had called him—had treated the family to fritters every Saturday morning since Abby could remember. He’d died twenty years ago, but Abby had continued the tradition with her own family until Lulu died, and it became too painful. Today, the donut shop’s seats and barstools were empty.

On Scholls Ferry Road, kids played on the swings and monkey bars of the elementary school. The time before the donut shop, Abby had found Mom by the cyclone fence, her fingers clenching the metal lattice, watching the kindergarten class play kickball. They both cried as Abby drove her back to the facility. Alzheimer’s had been brutal to her mother, stealing much of her mind. But memories of Lulu were ingrained, even deeper than those of Abby; Dora often gazed at her like they’d never met.

Abby pulled in front of the bookstore, ignoring the pang in her chest. Emily Krueger greeted her from behind the counter, sorting a new shipment of novels with bare-chested men and women in flowing gowns on their covers.

Abby explained the situation.

“I haven’t seen your mom. But I’ll call if I do.” Emily reached a hand across the counter and squeezed Abby’s forearm. Emily had endured the disappearance of her own daughter a few months ago. If anyone understood Abby’s concern, Emily did.

“Thank you. I’m sure she’s just out picking flowers or….” Or what? Where did a sixty-four-year-old woman wander to? What was she looking for when she left the warm confines of the assisted living home into the cool and murky outdoors?

“Maybe she’s folding laundry,” Emily said.

Abby chuckled despite her worry. During the summer, Dora had strolled into the laundromat down the road to fold a stranger’s tighty-whities. But that’s also why fear prickled Abby’s spine now. Dora stuck to the downtown area when she walked off.

Why not this time?

Abby slid back into her car and dialed Trudy at the sheriff’s station.

“No reports about your mom have come in today,” Trudy said.

“You’ll call if one does?”

“Certainly, hon. And I’ll let Jax know.”

Jax. Abby stretched her neck. “Don’t bother him. If needed, I’ll call him later.”

“Uh oh. I thought you two had decided to work on your relationship.”

“We’ve been so busy and….” Abby trailed off. She didn’t have a good reason for why things hadn’t progressed between them, only that she was to blame.

“It’ll work itself out,” Trudy said. “You’ve both been through a lot.”

Abby gnawed on her thumbnail. “Yeah. You’re right.”

“Have you checked the ocean parks?”

“Next on my list.”

Abby accelerated out of town, tension growing in her shoulders. It shouldn’t be so easy for residents to walk out of an assisted living center. In truth, she was more annoyed with herself that Dora had to be there in the first place.

But Abby had to work and couldn’t give her mom the full-time care she needed. Better facilities could be found in Portland, those focused on memory diseases, but they were a couple-hour drive. At least when her mom walked off from Stonebridge, she couldn’t get far, and Abby was close enough to hop in her car to search. She’d been in law enforcement long enough to know those thirty to sixty minutes could make all the difference.

A fact she was being reminded of today and another source of frustration. Abby hadn’t caught the call on her phone when the staff at Stonebridge first reached out this morning. It took three attempts. She’d been in the shower shaving her legs, of all things. As if anyone would notice.

Abby turned into the boat basin. She cruised through the parking lot, noting the fishing boats rocking dockside. She scanned each of them, spotting a crew of fishermen getting ready to brave the bar, but no redheads traversed the area.

Next, she headed out Ocean Drive, turning onto Meddle Road a couple of miles later. The route led to the ocean and was miles from the facility. Too far for Dora to wander? She’d been gone for half a day. If motivated, she could have made it this far. Abby’s hands tightened on the wheel. Thick mist had rolled in and hung in the sky. The temperature had dipped.

She swung her car into the abandoned beach parking lot and got out. Wind whistled past her as she crested the top of the lot and scanned the shore. The sand blasted against her pant legs with hollow pops and stung her face. She lowered the sunglasses from the top of her head onto her eyes and wrapped her jacket tighter as the cool air bit through the thin fabric.

Where are you, Mom?

Seagulls squawked overhead, catching the drafts. A few landed near the surf, arguing over an empty Styrofoam container. Aside from birds, though, the beach was empty. Only rocks stood sentinel offshore, water eddying around them. This was too far south of one of the surfing beaches and too far north of the other. No place to crab or fish here either. Summer had long passed for tourists to visit, except for the random one or two that had lost their way and stumbled upon the place. The local morning beachcombers had already come and gone, likely sipping coffee in front of a warm fire by now.

Abby’s focus drifted to the tree lined cliffs in the distance. Some trees had fallen, catapult and hapless, onto the dunes. Other had come in on the tide. Abby scanned the area for signs of her mother. That’s when she saw the splash of red rising from a row of logs near the sandy ridge.

Whatever was there had hunkered down. Hiding?

Mom. Abby raced down the hill, the soft white sand sucking at her practical flats. She gave up and kicked them aside. Fifty yards farther, she hit the hardpack and sprinted, the wind at her back. As she drew closer, another flash of red provided certainty that it was hair flapping in the wind.

“Mom, is that you?” Abby hollered.

She slowed her pace to a walk as she approached. The woman was dressed in a nightgown and hunched like a turtle with only her back showing. Shaking. Her red hair, streaked in gray, whipped upward. My god. She was whimpering.

Abby’s heart pounded. Her mother must be freezing.

She almost ran again but it was always best to approach Dora in the same manner she’d approach a small child. Or a suspect.

“Mom?” she said again. Still no response. If she was deep in her illness, the word might not register. “Dora?”

Her mother lifted her head. “It’s mine.”

Abby blew out a long, weary sigh. She’d found Dora—alive and talking. That’s what mattered. Slipping out of her jacket, Abby draped it over her mom before sitting on the log next to her.

“You sure came a long way.” Abby gazed out at the water. Relief at finding her mother unharmed whooshed through her like the breeze around them. Her heartbeat found its steady rhythm. “How about we get someplace warm and dry? Pancakes sound good, don’t they? Let’s find some hot pancakes and drench them in real maple syrup. You’d love that, right?”

“Okay. But I want to take it with me. I found it.”

Her mother had probably discovered some unique shell or glass fishing float. Whatever she’d found, she could keep. Abby would help her display it in her room. “Sure, Mom.”

Dora straightened, and Abby’s stomach twisted at the sight of the blood saturating the front of her mother’s white gown.

“Are you okay?” Abby said, her voice inching up.

Then she saw the source of the blood.

In her hands, she held a tennis shoe containing a severed foot.

West Heart Kill by Dann McDorman Book Review

About the Book:

An isolated hunt club. A raging storm. Three corpses, discovered within four days. A cast of monied, scheming, unfaithful characters.

When private detective Adam McAnnis joins an old college friend for the Bicentennial weekend at the exclusive West Heart club in upstate New York, he finds himself among a set of not-entirely-friendly strangers. Then the body of one of the members is found at the lake’s edge; hours later, a major storm hits. By the time power is restored on Sunday, two more people will be dead . . .

My Review:

This novel is really different and the style did not appeal to me at all. The author seems to be explaining the concept of a murder mystery as he, in fact, writes the mystery. I felt like I was receiving a lecture about how to write a mystery. This is a novel for people interested in the construction technique of writing a mystery rather than just reading a well crafted one. I was disappointed the all too often used storm cutting the people off from the rest of the world was a part of the action. And then the end, or rather a sort of non-end, was really unsatisfactory.

McDorman is a clever author and this is unique in its style. The literary asides were not for me. The novel did not keep my attention as I was looking for a mystery, not a book about mysteries. It would be interesting to read a traditional mystery by this author. He is clever and has the ability to write a captivating mystery, I think. This one was just not for me.

My rating: 3/5 stars.

A Lonesome Blood-red Sun by David Putnam Book Review

About the Book:

Dave Beckett, a homicide detective who doesn’t color within the lines, is regulated to the lowest job in the division and is known by his peers as The Bone Dick. He handles all “bag of bone” cases found in San Bernardino County’s twenty thousand square miles, at present, count 256 pending unsolved. It’s a boring, mundane job…until it isn’t. In
A Lonesome Blood-red Sun, Beckett is called to a house far out in the desert where a dog has brought a bone to the back door. Beckett investigates and discovers the victim, two years dead, is someone he knows. Beckett, with his usual verve and colorful methods, tracks the killer. The trail leads through a warren of dead ends until he discovers a most unlikely suspect hiding in plain sight.

My Review:

This is the second novel I have read featuring Beckett. He is a tough law enforcement officer and is not afraid to break the rules to get the villain or protect his fellow officers. Putnam again shows his experience in law enforcement, giving the novel an authentic feel.

I did find this plot to be more disjointed than I would have liked. Beckett's investigative procedure seems more about him than actually solving the case. I was surprised at the number of times he stretched or broke rules along the way. I liked the first novel in this series but this one less so.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

You can read my review of the first book in this series, A Fearsome Moonlight Black.

My Review:

This is a little book but it contains a great deal of information and many practical ideas. Cooney reviews the latest scientific findings. She helps us understand anxiety and explains how it differs from fear. I like her information on meta-cognition, that we can be aware of our thoughts. We can observe our thoughts about anxiety and become aware of its triggers and patterns. We can reformat our brain using intentional thought creation, training our brain to look for the positive.

My favorite part of this book was the biblical approach to overcoming anxiety. Cooney explains the concept of a renewed mind and gives practical steps for the daily process. She also includes ideas for building a thriving life beyond anxiety, including mental wellness and preventing an anxiety relapse. I appreciate her suggesting we not avoid anxiety altogether but learn from it and see it as a catalyst for growth.

This is a good book for those ready to no longer let past programming and circumstances rule but rather be intentional in our thoughts. Cooney provides information, practical suggestions and reflective questions to help us on the journey to a life beyond anxiety.

My rating: 4/5 stars.
