A classic cold case reopened—along with Pandora's box
The story turned reporter Clare Carlson into a media superstar overnight. Clare broke exclusive after exclusive. She had unprecedented access to the Devlin family as she wrote about the heartbreaking search for their young daughter. She later won a Pulitzer Prize for her extraordinary coverage of the case.
Now Clare once again plunges back into this sensational story. With new evidence, new victims and new suspects – too many suspects. Everyone from members of a motorcycle gang to a prominent politician running for a US Senate seat seem to have secrets they're hiding about what might have happened to Lucy Devlin. But Clare has her own secrets too. And, in order to untangle the truth about Lucy Devlin, she must finally confront her own tortuous past.
This mystery was a roller coaster. Just when I thought Clare was on the right track there would be a radical twist to the plot. Layers of deceit were uncovered piece by piece. In the end it all made sense but what a ride to get there.
Clare is a flawed heroine but I liked her. She was tenacious in her search for the truth. Yet she found that discovering the truth did not always bring the relief she was looking for. And that brought up the issue of journalistic ethics. What would she do when she was asked to violate her own principles for something that might be for a greater good?
I recommend this mystery to readers who enjoy a plot that includes a flawed heroine, many secrets from the past, plenty of twists, and a conclusion that is reasonable but still leaves you wondering just a bit.
My rating: 4/5 stars.
