I
came into this series reading this novel, the fifth one. I enjoyed it
so much I've already gone back to the beginning, reading through the first three.
I
like the characters. The Forensic Instincts team is an odd collection
of people who are the best at what they do. Casey, head of the
company, has collected them and manages to corral their distinctive
personalities. I like how the team works. They have unquestioned
loyalty to each other yet have lively arguments as to the next move
forward. Being independent from law enforcement means they can get
the job done without having to move within the confines of law
enforcement protocol. With skills ranging from ex-FBI to
technological wizardry to psychic insight, I'm glad they are good
guys.
I
like the complicated yet easy to follow plot. The central issue
involves performance enhancing drugs and a narcissistic Russian
scientist who wants to create the means to a smarter, faster,
stronger human being. He'll stop at nothing to reach his goal of
winning a Nobel Prize, including human experimentation, torture, and
murder. No one seems to be able to stop him.
That's
where FI comes in. Emma, the newest member on the team, convinces
Casey to investigate a murder. Soon we readers are making our way
through the ruthless world of underground drugs and the pressures of
being an Olympics bound athlete. The pace of the plot is good. The
investigative action is interspersed with suspense and events in the
personal lives of the FI team. Although it is a long novel, the
variety of action and character insight kept me avidly reading to the
suspenseful end.
I
recommend this book to those who enjoy a character driven novel of
suspense and who are not put off by sexual scenes or ones of torture.
Kane does well at describing action and there may be a bit too much
violence for sensitive readers.
A
note to my regular blog followers: This novel contains mild sex
scenes, vulgar language, and swearing.
