Jimmy at the Crossroads by Bob Williams Book Review

About the Book:

When faith meets folly at the corner of Walk and Don’t Walk... one man must decide what’s worth saving.

After a near-fatal accident, Jimmy Goodright wakes up in the ICU with no memory of how he got there — or why the once-charming town of Centerville suddenly feels… sanitized. The church he grew up in has been reborn as The Church of Perpetual Sanitation, and the people he trusted most seem eager to scrub away the past — including the truth.

As Jimmy searches for answers, he uncovers a web of moral compromise, misplaced faith, and spiritual confusion that mirrors the chaos of our own times. Guided by the town’s wise but mysterious “cookie lady,” Jimmy is forced to face his own doubts and rediscover what it means to believe when the world calls truth
and faith a joke.

Jimmy at the Crossroads: Cookies, Chaos, and the Call to Faith is a satirical Christian novel that blends humor, mystery, and heartfelt reflection to explore how faith survives when culture turns upside down. With wit and warmth, Bob Williams invites readers to laugh, think, and remember that even in chaos, God still calls us to something higher.

This is a book for anyone who enjoys:
  • Christian satire with a modern edge
  • Faith-based mysteries full of wit and heart
  • Stories that entertain and provoke reflection
  • Small-town suspense with universal themes of hope and redemption

My Review:

This is an unusual story. I am not sure it fits into any regular category. It's fiction but sometimes is like a parable, a story with deeper meaning to dig out. At other times it reads a little like fantasy. The story wanders, just like our faith life does. Sometimes it seems so real. At other times it is like a fairy tale or maybe a nightmare. Sometimes we need to step away from the noise. Sometimes we need to talk to someone who might help us clarify our thoughts. Sometimes it seems like we may never figure it out. There is an Afterward with questions for discussion. They helped me to realize more what Williams was trying to accomplish with this writing.

I did find this novella entertaining. Williams includes a bit of humor, a bit of critique of contemporary Christianity, a bit of tongue in cheek observation, some satire. I think it would be best to read it and then talk about it with another. Williams says he knows some will not “get it” and that's okay. It is good for getting one thinking though. There will be a sequel.

My rating: 4/5 stars.

About the Author:

Bob grew up in a small Michigan town where faith, curiosity, and mischief often overlapped. After a career in healthcare leadership, he retired to North Carolina with his wife, Sandy, where they enjoy time with their two adult children and three grandchildren.

These days, Bob is more likely to be found restoring antique clocks, building and flying RC airplanes, or inventing new ways to get into “good trouble” on the page. His debut novel, Jimmy at the Crossroads: Cookies, Chaos, and the Call to Faith, proves that sometimes the best way to wrestle with truth is through satire—especially when cookies and garbage trucks get involved.
