The smart move is to return to the safety of the present, but Olivia possesses a secret and is about to defy the unwritten rules of time-travel. She convinces Steven to let her stay in his time and help unravel the motives behind the murder, even if it means risking her own life to save another.
When Steven delves into the investigation, he discovers how a bitter relationship, a chance encounter, and a fateful decision converged to set the stage for murder. In a maze full of unreliable clues and misdirection, dark secrets refuse to stay buried and forgotten ghosts won’t fade away. Steven is reminded that old sins cast long shadows.
Can Steven catch the killer before time runs out for Olivia?

This series is an interesting twist on the typical historical police procedure murder mystery. Bringing in a woman from the present time adds a bit of intrigue to the narrative. I really like the descriptions of the 1934 era, such as the radio programs, books and magazines. I like Steven as the detective. The evidence at the murder is practically non existent and I liked how Steven methodically uncovered relationships to identify the murderer.
The structure of the plot includes going back and forth to various time periods. There are the current time and 1934, of course, but then there are also flashbacks to 1907, 1917 and more as back story is filled in. I found that a bit distracting for the flow of the plot.
Though this novel is the third in a series, I thought it read very well on its own. It is a fun historical police murder investigation with just enough time travel to add a little spice. Like me, you might end up wondering if it is really possible to change the past.
My rating: 4/5 stars.
