Cold Vengeance by Nancy Mehl Book Review

About the Book:

When a renowned crime podcaster vanishes without a trace, former FBI behavioral analysts turned private investigators River Ryland and Tony St. Clair are called upon to track her down. As they wade through the evidence she left behind, they unearth a startling connection--she may have discovered the existence of an unknown killer, and he will stop at nothing to carry out a deadly plan.

As the pair delves deeper, they soon find themselves the targets of a relentless enemy determined to silence them. With their lives--and hearts--on the line, can they confront the evil that threatens them before it consumes them both?

My Review:

Several story lines run through this novel. There is a missing cold crime podcaster Ryland and St. Clair agree to try to find. There are the intriguing cold cases the podcaster was investigating. There is the serial murderer still after Ryland. There is Ryland's family drama, estranged from her father and her mother diagnosed with Alzheimer's. And last but not least, the potential romance between Ryland and St. Clair.

That's a great deal of stuff going on and it seems the possible suspenseful investigation takes a back seat to all the relationship issues. While Ryland and St. Clair investigate the missing podcaster, they do not really solve the case as the necessary information is revealed from an external source, almost out of the blue. There is some suspense here and there and a good dose near the end. There is a clear Christian faith message included.

This is a novel for readers who like more about relationships and less about suspenseful investigative action. It is the third book in the series. It reads pretty well on its own but much of the potential tension in this novel is based on previous ones.

My rating: 3/5 stars.

You can read my reviews of the earlier books in the series: Cold Pursuit and Cold Threat
