This novel is quite a journey through the actions of the Cartel in the southern part of the U.S. One man tries to stand up against their drug running and human trafficking deeds. It took a while to understand and get to like Detective Nathan Parker. He seemed to be rash at first, doing acts without thinking them through. He thought he knew best what to do, even overriding his superiors. And he seemed to get out of impossible situations repeatedly, even when death was sure. By the time I finished the book and understood all of the intrigue behind his actions, I liked him and would like to read another with him as the hero.
L'Etoile's writing style is very readable. The plot structure is complex as there are deceivers and people being deceived, including within various government law enforcement agencies. Even in the end I was not sure really who all was in cahoots with the Cartel and who just got caught up in their web. I felt the characters were drawn relatively well, one quirky enough to add some interest.
This is a good novel for readers who would like a venture into the actions of the Cartel, the plight of immigrants and the dangerous trip across the border.
