Synopsis:DCI Lorimer is back in the next gripping atmospheric police procedural by international bestselling author Alex Gray.
When Chief Inspector Lorimer returns from holiday on the island of Mull, he feels a welcome sense of calm. But that doesn’t last long. Kelvin Football Club’s new star midfielder is found brutally stabbed to death in his own home, and with his wife apprehended trying to leave the country, a seemingly straightforward new case begins. But the grisly murder of a referee after a Kelvin match throws light on some dark secrets. And when the newest player who signed to the club becomes the latest victim in a string of killings, Lorimer knows there’s a serial killer on the loose—one that’s only beginning to show his true colors. As lies emerge and tensions build, Lorimer must discover the truth before one of the players or managers become the next Kelvin fatality.
This novel featuring the police work of DCI Lorimer is a good mixture of police procedure and his personal life. The novel opens with Lorimer and his wife, Maggie, at the end of a much needed vacation. Shortly into the novel Maggie takes in a stray cat. Those elements bring in a personal aspect to Lorimer's police work.
The main draw of the novel is the police investigation. It starts with the stabbing death of a prominent football (soccer) player on a local team. The authorities arrest the wife but Lorimer is not so sure she is guilty. And then a referee is shot at close range and shortly after another footballer is murdered. Lorimer and his team work methodically to uncover the murderer.
I like the Scotland setting of the series. Gray captures the brogue of the locals without making it unreadable. Readers will also get a sense of how much the locals love their football team. It would be a plus for readers to be familiar with and enjoy the sport as it is prominent in this novel.
I grew up on Agatha Christie so I really enjoyed this novel from Gray. I recommend it to those who like reading police procedure when it includes a refreshing amount of the human element. There is not much suspense included but there is a bit of a twist at the end.
My rating: 4/5 stars.
Note: this is a reprint of the novel first released in 2008.
