Woman in Shadow
by Carrie Stuart Parks
July 12-23, 2021 Tour
A woman off the grid.
Darby Graham thinks she's on a much-needed vacation in remote Idaho to relax. But before she even arrives at the ranch, an earthquake strikes—her first clue that something is amiss. Then when a cabin on the edge of town is engulfed in flames and problems at the ranch escalate, Darby finds herself immersed in a chilling mystery.
A town on fire.
A serial arsonist sends taunting letters to the press after each fire. As a forensic linguist, this is Darby’s area of expertise . . . but the scars it’s caused her also the reason she’s trying to escape from her life.
A growing darkness.
As the shadows continue to move in, the pieces of the town around her come into sharper focus. Can she trust the one man who sees her clearly?
Praise for Woman in Shadow:
“Unique, witty, and hilarious, Carrie's voice shines throughout Woman in Shadow. The perfect mix of intrigue, mystery and danger, this is most definitely a book for my keeper shelf.”
—Dani Pettrey, bestselling author of the Coastal Guardians series
Parks does a good job of dropping us into a nightmare. It sounded so good, being off the grid in a remote location after healing from a traumatic experience. Except when bad things start happening. Darby is a good heroine with much to overcome. One theme of the novel is fighting through the shadows hounding us and that is what Darby has to do. Her character is a good example of being more then she ever thought she could be. The plot is complex with many murders and many suspects. Figuring out the villain(s) is difficult as motives are not revealed until close to the end. I would have liked more foreshadowing. The fires in the town seemed unessential and only to serve as a means for Darby to show her skill in her work. I would have liked a tighter connection to the basic plot.
I appreciate learning about a new profession and in this novel it is a forensic linguist. I now know how notes sent by villains can be analyzed for information. And the setting for the novel is very informative. Being close to the Yellowstone cauldron with all the geological unrest was exciting.
This is not my favorite from Parks as those are still the ones featuring Gwen Marcey, but it is an entertaining and suspenseful novel. I like how Parks writes and will be looking for the next from her.
My rating: 4/5 stars.
