Rees begins investigating and quickly becomes entranced by the exotic circus performers, especially the beautiful young tightrope walker.
Other murders follow. Who is the killer? One of the circus performers? One of the townspeople? Or One of the Shakers?
This is my first Will Rees novel and I had some trouble liking him. He seemed to react too quickly and harshly, all based on his previous experiences. He didn't give the magistrate the time to explain himself before throwing him out, for example. He assumed facts based on his own reactions rather than careful observations. He is not my kind of likable amateur investigator. One of the Shakers, Rees admits, must see him as brash, opinionated, and habitually angry. He hurts the feelings of his wife frequently. He admits he behaves in a spiteful and petty manner toward her. I really had trouble being engaged by his thoughtless and lying personality.
The setting of the plot is very interesting, a small town in Maine. And the most interesting aspect of this historical mystery was the circus. Kuhns adds more facts about its origin and history in her Author's Note. The mystery was interesting with several suspects. I was a little disappointed Rees did not really solve it but came upon the conclusion only with the insightful help of his wife. Perhaps she should be the heroine of the next in the series.
